When Productivity Starts Replacing Your Wellbeing

When Productivity Starts Replacing Your Wellbeing

Mental Health Awareness Week feels like a good time to talk about something I’ve been noticing in myself recently.

Sometimes being productive all the time is just a way of avoiding something that feels a bit off or missing, we tell ourselves it's a good thing and it actually feels quite satisfying to:

  • Fill up the calendar.

  • Constantly think about goals.

  • Make the to-do this the priority in life.

For a while, I convinced myself that because I was being productive, I was doing great.

But I started noticing something subtle happening. My work was slowly bleeding into my personal time. I’d reach the end of the day mentally full, and things I wanted to do to feed my soul was being put on the backburner.

Productivity can feel comforting, especially when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. Ticking things off gives us a sense of control. But I’ve realised there’s a difference between being organised and using productivity to avoid the things that truly matter.

After a close shave with burnout, I’ve been trying to approach my time more intentionally. Leaving space to properly review my week instead of just reacting to it. Planning breaks before I need them. Giving myself permission to stop working at a realistic time. Building systems that support my wellbeing rather than just my client base.

I think a lot of business owners and people working from home experience this without even realising. When your work and home exist in the same space, the lines can become very blurry.

What I’m learning is that wellbeing isn’t something that magically appears once the to-do list is finished, because the list is never really finished…
